XXL Xtreme Xperience Land
The gas turbine power plant in Alessandria, in Piedmont region, a plant that does not produce energy since 1994, is the first site whose conversion was chosen through a international competition. Enel launched the competition in collaboration with the City of Alessandria, the Polytechnic of Milan and the University of Eastern Piedmont.
A real call to action for gathering and evaluating proposals, which involved more than 200 participants from 9 countries.
XXL was awarded the first prize because of its excellence according to all the evaluation criteria. In particular the design quality is top-level and the concept is innovative both in terms of architecture and management. In fact, the idea enhances the industrial identity of the power plant and keeps the historical memory of the site, by reusing many existing structures for sports activities, integrating them adequately into the project. The idea is based on a interesting and potentially profitable business model, with positive externalities, the ability to attract the attention towards the territory and employment implications for Alessandria and the surrounding areas, focusing especially on young people.
The team that created XXL, formed by RECCHIENGINEERING SRL, Frigerio Design Group, Ing. Livio Dezzani, Arch. Stefano Ponzano, Ing. Ermanno Maritano, also proposed an interesting and potentially profitable business model, with positive externalities, the ability to attract to the area and employment benefits for Alessandria and the surrounding areas, particularly focused on young people.
The presentation ceremony of the FUTUR-E project, and the awards ceremony for this first contest, took place in Rome in December 15th 2015 at the Auditorium ENEL in Rome.
Xtreme Xperience Land
XXL (Xtreme Xperience Land) is the first theme park in Italy dedicated to extreme sports and entertainment. A multi-experience space, where everyone can find an offer that suits their needs.
Located in a strategic geographical position with a very large user base, the project stands as an important new territorial polarity with an urban marketing value for the city of Alessandria.
XXL offers a mix of extreme sports suitable to everyone, in addiction to educational and teambuilding activities. An experience that becomes an entertainment and learning vehicle, involving all the five senses. Experiment intense emotions, while interacting with others and having fun.
A revolution in the world of extreme sports: you no longer need to reach specific locations often inaccessible to live an adrenalin rush and charged-up emotions. You can find outdoor and indoor activities all in a single place. The extreme sports move towards the city.
All in an exceptional site, a disused power plant. By keeping the memory and the communicative power of the massive industrial facility, it becomes the perfect setting for the planned activities.
At the site a single new, "building-path" is installed, which winds up through the area, distributing the visitors and providing support services to the various activities.
5 thematic areas (water, earth, air, energy, nature), inspired by the natural elements, recreating the environments to live unique experiences.
Slow
- Minimize demolitions to contain costs;
- Recover as much as possible according to the environmental sustainability logic;
- Implement new energy-efficient volumes;
- Increase the green and draining surface;
- Low energy intake activities.
