The site sits on the west side of Xiangyang Road, nestled within the texture of an existing industrial district. Surrounding it is a mosaic of urban life—small-scale businesses that have emerged organically over time, shaped by the layered evolution of industry and city life. Amid these newer additions, many older, low-rise workshops remain, particularly those dedicated to car repair and modification, forming a distinct industrial cluster. This mix grants the area a vibrant and authentic atmosphere, quite unlike the usual context found around social housing developments in residential zones.
Yet, as with many industrial areas, pedestrian infrastructure is limited. The original urban plans for this zone offered little consideration for walkability. Many of the alleys are in fact private and were never formally integrated into the public road network. Under the broader policy framework of Nangang’s urban renewal, the district is expected to gradually transform—but such change will unfold slowly, piece by piece.
Though Xiangyang Road serves as the boundary of Xixin Village, the project site, which faces this road, remains disconnected due to the lack of direct, accessible routes. Beyond providing high-quality living spaces typical of social housing, the project embraces a broader ambition: to open up the site, to stitch the fragmented fabric back together through a series of public spaces and circulation corridors.
By rethinking how people move through the area, the design introduces a system of open, continuous paths and plazas—spaces that encourage not only passage but pause, interaction, and shared use. Anchored by a new community center, this network seeks to break through the rigid grain of the industrial blocks, enabling everyday life to flow more freely across boundaries. It creates an east–west connection that invites movement, dialogue, and discovery. In time, this place is envisioned not just as a residence, but as a lively, welcoming destination—one that belongs to the people of the neighborhood, and one they will return to again and again.
