The Xiangshan International Kindergarten is a 5,000-square-metre, 18-classroom modular hybrid wood structure building. The design team's concept is people-oriented, with the intention of providing children with a green space in which they can experience nature and meet teaching and life requirements. The structure system is a modern prefabricated glued wood frame-steel frame hybrid, and the design is modular. The utilisation of such a structure offers numerous advantages, including enhanced insulation, reduced energy consumption, seismic resistance, and the promotion of health and comfort. This environmentally sustainable building product draws inspiration from and is in harmony with nature. The architectural plane design employs a 3.3m module for modular combination, utilising European spruce as the primary structural material. The floor incorporates a standard SPF and OSB structural system, while the façade windows comprise CLT board combination modules. The local space units adopt the innovative technology of factory overall prefabrication and assembly. The design of the kindergarten site landscape is informed by the principles of intensive land use, with the garden layout being streamlined in its overall configuration to follow the activity trajectory of children. The provision of additional public activity venues for children is facilitated by the low-rise ventilation overhead layer. The roof is constructed with glued wood beams that overlap to form a ventilation and insulation overhead layer, which is used to arrange and hide technical pipelines and equipment, ensuring the quality of the indoor space environment. The designer has integrated a 10-metre cantilevered steel structure ramp and umbrella-shaped frame within the inner courtyard of the building, providing children with an engaging space characterised by three-dimensional activity paths. The green space design, which integrates nature and the innovative construction of children as the centre, serves as a replicable ecological education space model for the construction of child-friendly cities, as evidenced by Xiangshan International Kindergarten.
