Xiamen International Airport extension 2008 competition

The planning of this extension was influenced by the requirement for flexibility in the flow and mix of the airport’s domestic and international passengers.
This idea was then expanded to produce an overall design that is a composition of different masses, each with a distinct function, that join together.
A welcome canopy invites visitors to explore its many services
(retail and restaurants), making a new shopping centre attraction not only for passengers but also for nearby residents. The facade was designed as a patchwork of elements that reflect and interact with one another, emphasising the overall building concept.
