The East Lake is a large freshwater lake within the city limits of Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. It is one of the largest 5A tourist zones of China, welcoming over millions guests every year. On April 28, 2018, East Lake was selected to be the place where Chinese President Xi Jinping held an informal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After the meeting, Wuhan government decided to refresh the main entrance of the East Lake area with an international landmark design.
The East Lake Park has a superior geographic location by sitting at the end of Wuhan Avenue. Too much shady green trees make the current main entrance and its front open square unattractive and less important. In the new design, a full circle sky walkway is lifted up at the south entrance and extended to the lake surface. Tourists are encouraged to walk through the pedestrian for having a widen view of this beautiful lake and natural surroundings. An abstract twisted sculpture sits in the central of the walkway, representing the front open square—Pear Flower Square. It will be connected to the sky walkway by using the cantilever structure technology.
The visitor center is re-located next to the sculpture on the south of the entrance. It will be a trapezoidal 2-story building with green ramps attached on both two sides. The ramps also provide access to the 2nd floor. French glass decoration makes the building interior clean and transparent. In front of the visitor center, a sunken ramp will be dug out along the riverbank to allow visitors be more intimate with water resources.
The whole revolutionary design integrates the East Lake area into a larger cultural and eco network of Wuhan city and promotes the city to be more attractive to the world.
