The project of the extension of the
World Trade Organization headquarters draws inspiration, in the framework of
the competition, from its analysis-and-monitoring mission.
Thus in the way of a histogram, the
main volume of the new building repeats juxtaposed vertical modules of
different heights and colours in the façades.
It is posed on another simple
volume entirely made of glass and transparent, accommodating the reception hall
and restaurants and bars on which it seems to be levitated.
The whole reposes on a solid
plinth, lodging the technical organs and archives necessary for the efficient
functioning of the Organisation.
Environmental aspects are equally
taken into account.
A series of semi-transparent
photovoltaic cells integrated into the glassware is developed on the exposed
façades and also serve to shade the sun.
The roofing is of plant origin,
repeating the pattern of the underlying volumes, recreating thong-like bits and
prolonging the landscaped pattern of the front square. This isolates the
building efficiently at roofing level and limits rainwater evaporation, which
is itself stored to be later used for gardening and maintenance.
The nearness of the
waters of Lake Leman cools the building in summer, and preheats it in winter,
thus limiting the use of fossil fuels.
