A Manhattan Duplex Reenvisioned
On the top floor of a building at Worldwide Plaza in Manhattan, this gut renovation transformed an unremarkable duplex into a refined, contemporary residence shaped by contrast. The design draws on the inherent differences between the apartment’s two levels to create a warm, intimate lower floor and a luminous, open upper level while maintaining a cohesive architectural language throughout.
Designed for an anesthesiologist affiliated with Columbia University with plans to grow his family, the project maximizes spatial efficiency, elevates material quality, and enhances long-term value.
A restrained, neutral palette provides continuity, with each level having its own character. Below, darker tones and rich materials define a tranquil primary suite and spa-like bath. Above, daylight animates an expansive living, dining, and kitchen area unified by a continuous light cove. Interventions include a reconfigured kitchen with high-performance finishes, a relocated gas fireplace, and the conversion of underutilized areas into a third bedroom and additional full bath.
The result is a carefully calibrated urban home that balances warmth and openness, privacy and connection tailored to both present needs and future growth.
