By
positioning the building in the middle of the proposed dike sector, we are
creating a relay at the meeting point of fresh and salt water, Noord Holland
and Fryslan and natural and man- made environments. The
facade of the building is composed of a number of concrete boxes of different
dimensions. These boxes are superimposed in a random order so as to create an
environment that appears to be uncontrolled. The
demanded concept of a building that changes both inside and out every 500 days
is generally contrary to sustainability. Resolving this conflict, we are proposing
a building that follows the rhythm of nature. Every seasonal, meteorological
and natural occurrence will appear on the fade of the building, permitting a
natural dialogue with nature. This is a very integral aspect of the project due
to the fact that it is a very simple and efficient way of demonstrating the changes
in nature, which is a centerpiece of ecological thought. The
building is composed of both public and private spaces which will create a
dynamic sustainability center open to all types of people: from those ignorant
in its concept, to top researchers in the field. The program is composed of
three major parts: the first will be devoted to leisure, including exhibitions,
ecological presentations, restaurants, multi-purpose auditorium and boutiques.
The second is research-oriented, composed of libraries, offices, outdoor and
indoor laboratories, conference rooms as well as the aforementioned
multi-purpose auditorium. Finally, the third is a hotel that can also be
converted into residences for the research team and seminars. This mix of
components will exert a positive influence on the research project by the
intermingling of people and the subsequent exchange of ideas.
The
structure of the building allows it to evolve according to its needs thanks to
the malleability created by its structural typology.
The
center courtyard will allow for a vertical exhibition space, which can be seen
from every floor, recalling a general theme.
The
building has a public circulating space as well as private circulating points
controlled by either a badge system or a reception area.
