Nestled in the heart of Nagasaki's natural beauty, this urban coworking space offers an environment that stimulates the senses and elevates creativity. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape, the design seamlessly integrates local materials with sophisticated modern aesthetics. Breaking away from traditional notions of "luxury," a completely new approach to architecture and interiors has emerged, offering a fresh take on refined elegance.
This is not just an office space. It is a dynamic hub where creative individuals from Nagasaki come together to take on global challenges. Here, the local heritage meets a forward-thinking urban sensibility, creating the perfect setting for the next generation of ideas to sprout and flourish.
This space is dedicated to fully supporting the creativity of those who will shape the future.
Nagasaki Stadium City is a privately-led development by JAPANET HOLDINGS Co., Ltd., featuring a multi-purpose complex centered around a soccer stadium. The project includes an arena, hotel, commercial spaces, and offices. Within this development, WORK@NAGASAKI, a next-generation co-working space, was strategically planned within the largest office building in Nagasaki Prefecture to attract both domestic and international companies. The design was led by Mitsuhiro Shoji of UCHIDA SHANGHAI, in collaboration with Yasuhisa Makino of Makino Yasuhisa Architect Office and Makoto Hayashi of OU-A Co., Ltd. Surrounded by the defining landscapes of Nagasaki, the site is ideally positioned at the heart of the city’s transformation. To the south lies the stadium, while the east overlooks the city's signature hillside residences. To the west stands Mt. Inasa, a beloved city landmark, and to the north, Peace Park stretches along the river—creating a dynamic and inspiring environment for this innovative workspace.
Our goal was to redefine design—moving beyond the conventional aesthetics consumed in Nagasaki—to establish a space where local businesses and talent can thrive on a global stage. Guided by the themes of new creativity, new hospitality, and new architecture, we set out to create an environment that fosters innovation and growth. Nagasaki has long embraced diverse cultures and architectural influences, reinterpreting them in a way that shapes its unique cityscape. Inspired by this, we sought to capture the essence of Nagasaki’s streetscape, conducting fieldwork to uncover textures and architectural styles distinct to the region. These elements were thoughtfully integrated into our design. We prioritized locally available construction materials, minimizing the use of superficial finishes and avoiding purely decorative elements. By embracing authenticity in materials and craftsmanship, we created a space that reflects the true character of Nagasaki—timeless, innovative, and deeply rooted in its history.
Every detail was designed to eliminate superficial ornamentation and enhance the authentic texture of the space. Rather than relying on artificial finishes, we embraced natural, uneven textures that echo Nagasaki’s dynamic cityscape and organic surroundings, creating a more genuine and comfortable environment.
With its spectacular landscape, this coworking space is designed to inspire creativity in those who visit. The flexible layout allows users to choose their ideal spot based on the season, time of day, or personal preference, ensuring both comfort and functionality.
Alongside the breathtaking scenery, the space offers a variety of work settings—from quiet areas for deep concentration to collaborative zones for group work, adapting to different work styles and needs.
Our vision was to create a space that feels both cutting-edge and nostalgic, a place that connects people not just with architecture, but with the magnificent natural beauty of Nagasaki itself. More than just a workplace, it is a welcoming and inspiring environment designed to foster creativity and human connection.
