Serving a deprived area of North East London, the aim of Woodpecker Hall Primary Academy is to become an inclusive school that will provide outstanding facilities for a diverse spectrum of children. The proposed scheme is intended to be simple in its design principles and detailing, yet creative in the way it can be used. This not only offers a high degree of versatility and space utilisation, but also offers considerable value for money. Woodpecker Hall Primary Academy demonstrates that good design need not cost the earth. The simplicity of design is important not only to maximise the efficiencies of the build cost, but also in maintaining quality and minimising maintenance regimes. The palette of building materials proposed are traditional, used in a contemporary way - avoiding the latest fad in danger of dating quickly in favour of classic materials, creatively applied. They are robust in their application as well as easily maintained throughout their long term lifespan. The plan form is also flexible in supporting future expansion options, whilst maintaining the essence and ethos of the original design and educational vision within a creative, safe and secure environment. The plug in approach of any new build expansion plan is designed to be simple in its execution and to not require any extensive alterations or upgrades to the existing building and infrastructure. Central to the overall design of the academy are two ‘Learning Nests’, which will provide a range of flexible and adaptable environments to contribute to a positive learning experience and a range of teaching styles.Learning Nest 1 will group together the nursery, foundation and Year One spaces along a ‘Street’, which also connects directly to the hall. The Street can be used for small scale PE, group break out and play areas. Learning Nest 2 brings together Key Stage 2 and Year Two learners around another shared central space, the ‘Marketplace’. The Marketplace, like the Street, provides identity and fun, agile learning opportunities. By combining ICT, Library, Science, Art, Design and Technology with circulation helps create additional group working areas, and provides additional learning areas within a large, fun and flexible environment.
