The Woodnook project reinvents the traditional stone built terraced house, completely transforming internal layouts to create spacious, energy efficient family homes within a few minutes walk of Accrington and on a good commuter route to Manchester. Accrington is an attractive Victorian market town surrounded by beautiful villages and open countryside, therefore any architectural intervention was required to create an assimilation between old and new through contemporary internal intervention and harmonising external solutions.
Providing a more varied choice of 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes than the original dwellings catered. Externally we sought to enrich the architectural code of the existing buildings, cleaning and repairing traditional stone work and refurbishing key elements such as slate roofs to balance the historical arrangement. Design interventions have been made to elements such as the windows and the installation of internal wall insulation to provide energy efficient sustainable solutions to historic buildings whilst maintaining the desired aesthetic.
Internally, we created a contemporary aesthetic through bespoke design solutions unique to each property. Retention of the positive features such as high ceilings and large open windows which flood light into the space provide for a more lively living space as required by the modern family. The original boxy spaces have been sensitively manipulated and replaced with modern open living areas to create spacious accommodation.
There are 160 remodelled and refurbished homes at Woodnook, providing a mix of family homes for rent. In addition to the spacious internal layouts, we have made sure they will not be expensive to live in – each home should be around 50% cheaper to run compared to a typical terraced house in the neighbourhood.
