The Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark, is the oldest working bourbon distillery in the United States, tracing its origins to 1797. Its handsome distillery is set among the rolling hills of Kentucky’s horse country. The intimate visitor experience and distillery tour has long been a favorite tourism destination.
The recent boom in bourbon consumption has led to enormous interest in how the sumptuous brown liquor is made and the number of visitors has dramatically increased. Woodford Reserve recognized that they needed to expand and redefine their visitor experience in alignment with their targeted audience.
Officially opening the renovated visitor center on April 9, 2014, the Woodford Reserve homeplace has a look and feel that is relevant to today’s bourbon enthusiast. Over $1.5 Million was invested in the renovation, that took place over an 18 month period, and includes an enhanced retail center, a new tasting area and lounge.
In the interest of authenticity and respect for the heritage of the distillery, materials from the distillery grounds were repurposed and incorporated into furniture. Tables were crafted from reclaimed wood from a barn on the Distillery property. Coffee Tables in the main area of the visitor center were built from an old cypress vat once used at the Distillery. Copper is used for tasting room stools and details the fireplace that separates the tasting room form the lounge area.
