The word “journey” is a horribly overused cliché, but it is entirely apt when describing the visitor’s arrival at this Woodend House. Situated on a rural property, just one hour from Melbourne’s CBD, this house encourages a journey of discovery through a carefully choreographed experience of arrival. Totally engrained within its site, this house is a celebration of light, nature and the changing seasons.
The project came into fruition when the clients, who are passionate gardeners, began looking for a country property just outside of Melbourne. With the intent of establishing a country garden, which could one day be open to the public, the property had to fit a specific criterion. Issues of wind, temperature, rainfall and sun access were all taken into account.
When an elevated site overlooking a desolate and striking landscape came on the market, the clients jumped at the opportunity. Acquiring the property, the clients already knew what they wanted from the house and its design. A couple of years prior, they had read about Intermode’s award-winning Kilmore House and were impressed with its extensive use of glazing. When a planning permit required them to begin building within nine months of acquisition, the clients trusted Intermode would respond quickly.
With a sensitive understanding of the particular conditions of the site, Intermode’s response was to create a house which anchors itself into the sloped terrain. From Boundary Road, a gravel path takes visitors through a landscape of gumtrees and sprawling gardens. The house is approached along an easement on the high side of the site.
With its facade, painted in warm greys, the building almost disappears into the land, making only the lightest impressions upon the countryside.
The main living areas face north, and thanks to a T-shaped floorplan, every single space enjoys outward views of the surrounding landscape. Although relatively uncomplicated, the floorplan is a blueprint for a weekend escape - whether you’re having breakfast, a sleep-in or a reading session on the deck, every moment in the house is spent in celebration of being away from the city’s skyscrapers, traffic, people and noise.
To the left of the entrance are the living areas and kitchen. Punctuated by an open fireplace, this space has extensive glazing which capitalises on the blockbuster view. It seamlessly spills onto a surrounding deck which is perfect for long weekend lunches.
To the right is a spacious study, master bedroom and en suite. A spinal wall houses wardrobes, deep storage and a powder room. This considered arrangement promotes natural ventilation, good daylight penetration and efficiency of plan.
The longest part of the T-shape has two bedrooms, a laundry, and a family-sized bathroom. A second spinal wall runs along the southern orientation, allowing these rooms to be flooded with north-westerly light.
The Woodend House is a poetic response to the climatic demands of its countryside setting. The beauty of its arrangement and the way it’s been positioned within the landscape, reassures the clients that the emphasis here is not on the object, but the landscape which surrounds.
