This contemporary compound and its serene courtyards are largely a story of wood, water, and stone. What started as the remodel of a Victorian home on the St. Helena historic register evolved into a much larger project when the homeowners purchased the adjacent property behind their home. With the purchase, an opportunity arose to create a new wine country compound with a guest house, yoga barn, and garage, arranged around a landscaped courtyard. Drawing inspiration from local agrarian archetypes, as well as mid-century modern and contemporary forms, the new structures, designed by Covell Architects with interiors by Erin Martin Design, and built by Borges General Contracting, are intimately connected to the site’s natural surroundings.
As the existing ranch house was removed, an existing heritage Walnut tree and swimming pool were lovingly retained, and became organizing elements for the design, setting the themes of wood and water. The clients desired a contemplative setting for their living, working, exercise and entertainment spaces; the landscape serves to create distinctive outdoor experiences. The remodeled pool area with limestone paving and wood decking became the space that joined the old and new buildings. A modern lily pond fed by a custom Eucalyptus water sculpture is set within the serene courtyard garden, featuring Japanese Maples, Slender Veldt Grass and Acacia ‘Cousin Itt’. Limestone pavers lead guests to the front door, and beyond to form the pool terrace. Floating decks and seating of reclaimed Monterey Cypress, and fences of reclaimed Redwood grape stakes, provide a warm earthiness, along with the low-water use planting palette watered by a greywater-fed smart irrigation system.
By applying rigorous restraint to the family of hardscape materials and the planting palette, the landscape serves to pull together the variety of buildings, forms, and finishes, while creating distinctive outdoor experiences for the homeowners and their guests. We considered carefully how these outdoor spaces would be seen, heard, and experienced from all angles—and even while passing through them.
