Douro Wood House is a holiday house in the heart of Portugal’s Douro Valley. Designed with a conscious and sustainable approach, this modular wooden residence embodies a strong commitment to the principles of green architecture.
From the outset, the project aimed to minimize its impact on the surrounding landscape. The structural system is made entirely of timber sourced from certified, sustainably managed forests — a key choice that supports low environmental impact and reduced carbon footprint.
The building is elevated above the ground, preserving the natural topography and allowing for the free flow of water and wildlife. This suspended solution avoids invasive earthworks and respects the existing terrain.
The wooden cladding ensures a subtle chromatic and textural integration with the pine trees that characterize the area. The green roof, planted with native species, enhances thermal insulation, supports biodiversity, and visually extends the natural surroundings over the architecture itself.
Rather than imposing itself on the landscape, Wood House emerges from it — discreet, harmonious, and complementary. The result is a refined synthesis of architecture and nature, where building not only means inhabiting but also preserving and enhancing the environment.
