"Within the Matrix" gynecological clinic is located on the second floor of an apartment building in Glyfada | Attiki-Greece. The concept of the design is based on the idea of creating areas that will transfer the visitor-patient into a new spatial and temporal reality, negating the conservative standards of a private clinic. The orthonormal system is transformed into a game of diagonal lines with the furniture design creating a unified composition with multiple uses, including the waiting room, reception, library etc. These diagonal lines symbolize the pubic triangle of the woman seen on the Cycladic figures, such as the imaginary triangular shape resulting from the female body posture during the gynecological examination. The letter V is the initial of the word Venus and Vagina. The Venus symbol is historically associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite or Roman goddess Venus and is used to represent elements connected with the female sex.
The individual areas such as the corridor and waiting area are multiplied through reflection. The imaginary lines on the ceiling and the floor seem to expand. All the doors embody various spatial elements when opening and closing them. Architectural boundaries of the rooms disappear so as to absorb the visitor’s feeling of worry and nervousness. Colour filtering of the artificial light creates an imaginary journey inside the female body where the natural light gets filtered by the human skin. The WC is designed rounded so as to intensify the parallelism with the female uterus. Bright red colour combined with spatial reflections and geometrical surfaces of the furniture create a futuristic sensation. As in a science fiction movie space seems to have been created at a later time. This playful theatrical aesthetic contains by choice a sense of irony upon human’s illusive beliefs on future spaces, since this clinic’s program revolves around the newborn life.
