This residence / studio was designed for a pair of
artists. Their wish was to create their own, unique world, optimally conducive
to their creativity, within a very private space.
The artists live together with collaborators assisting
their work in the studio. They stay there almost 24 hours of the day,
especially before their monthly deadlines. Their relationship is that of an
alternative family, connected trough their taste of creativity.
They requested a building in which they can interact,
and share information regarding work, while at the same time have their own,
private territory. We studied the movement through each space, and their
relationship to one another intensely to determine the shapes and layout of each
floor.
The ground floor is used as the work area including a
library, studio, and dormitory for collaborators. The studio is placed 1 m
lower than ground level, while the dormitory space is 45 cm higher. The middle
floor is used as a semi-private area with dinning area, and kitchen. The upper
floor is the private area with the living room, bedroom, and bathrooms.
The overall spiral geometry of the building is centered
around a staircase with a large skylight above
reminiscent of a well. We laid out the floors around the stairwell in a skip
floor plan. From each level a portion of the floor above, and below can be
seen, striking a balance between openness, and privacy.
The material finishes are dark stained in the lower
floor, white stained in middle floor, and naked wood in the upper floor. The
interior facade of the lower floors are made with timber frames, while the
upper floors are covered with tilting glass. One must see the interior from all
levels to appreciate the change of scenery, dynamism of space, and the movement
of sunlight.
The layout of the house in relation to the site was also
very important to the clients. They wished to stay hidden physically from the
out side world as artists, but also wanted to be open to the community
as good neighbors. We cut out the corners of the site to
make open areas around the house. We placed big windows, and openings to be
able to see inside the house, but not to be able to see the activities of
inhabitants.
