Wishaw General Hospital is a completely new district general hospital on a 37 acre site to the south east of Glasgow that provides 689 beds with a full maternity unit and a 56 day bed surgical and medical day bed unit. Underlying mine workings and ground contamination dictated the T-shape layout of the compact two and three storey buildings. The design breaks up the scale of the building into a number of attractive human scale bays and courtyards and is constructed in a concrete frame clad in rendered blockwork with stone dressings and roofed in slate to reflect the strong local vernacular. The design maximises daylight and fresh air to as many of the spaces as possible. The whole is set in a stunning landscape of urban woodland and within the building there are 18 courtyards, each specially designed to aid patient recovery
