WING HOUSEThis Contemporary home design received a
highly commended award in the ADNZ / Origin Regional Design Awards. Large well
proportioned openings with high ceilings create a dramatic feeling home and
provide light and views. The colorsteel clad vee wing shaped roof design with
very high (3.8m) ceilings and large (3.5m) high windows were fundamental to
this design and provided a feeling of spaciousness with good views and light.
This was made possible with the use of origin I beam rafters and large span
laminated timber beams that were concealed in the skillion roof.

This home is one of three that were
designed on adjacent sites in the same street. It was produced for a property
developer client and sold off the plans and 3D visuals.
Later refinements were made to personalise
the design to the owners specific requirements.

A crucial element of the brief was to work
within a tight budget. They wanted to achieve a great design result that was
cost effective to build and had wide appeal for resale. This created a
challenge and lead to the selection of cost effect but contemporary materials.

The cladding is the combination of Firth
concrete block and black onduline.
Firth 10 series 390x190x90 deep concrete
block was used as a veneer for the majority of the house. Maintenance-free
permanent building materials, was a priority and the proven method of a drained
vented cavity on external walls also made sense. This was a more cost effect
option than reinforced solid concrete block and allowed for thicker insulation.
The same solid external appearance was still achieved. Smaller areas of the
thicker traditional 20 series reinforced concrete block were integrated
seamlessly, utilised at the entrance and a feature corner wall to both provide
sheltered wing walls and further ground the design and enhance the solid look.
