Wind River overlooks the Oakland Estuary and a strategic connection along Alameda’s waterfront. It is a nondescript corporate campus. What it lacks in originality, however, it makes up for in context. Oozing with history, the site is the birthplace of the modern shipping container (among other things)! So, when Groundworks Office was asked to design a number of waterfront overlooks, we could not resist tapping into the rich cornucopia of the past. From 1920 to 1945, a gantry structure transferred railcars onto barges at the terminus of the Alameda Belt Line Railroad. The process of moving containerized cargo from rail to the sea is the precursor to the modern way we ship cargo across the globe today. The hulking concrete pieces dotting the water’s edge are the vestigial remains of the historic structure. The overlook's design refers to the site's history and the impending effects that sea-level rise will have on this waterfront location. Designed and aligned to maximize the expansive views of Downtown Oakland and the East Bay, the overlooks are meant to educate and illuminate for each visitor on the complexities and dynamism of this place.
