Mine the Gap has been an international design competition dedicated to examine one of the most visible scars left after the collapse of the real estate market in Chicago: the massive hole along the Lake Michigan shore that had to be the foundation for a singular 150-story condominium tower which had to become a new icon for the city and region. The idea was to transform the hole into a forum where economical, social and environmental sustainability knowledge could meet together, be learnt and discussed by everyone. The building is meant to be a permanent museum/laboratory, where the latest innovations are gathered and displayed from all over the world. The building itself is an example of sustainability thanks to its energy high-efficiency concept designed to catch the wind, gather the rain and maximise heat insulation.
