The William King Museum of Art invited ARCHITECTUREFIRM to envision a new addition and renovation to their existing museum and art education facilities in the rolling hills of Western Virginia. The museum acts almost as an art institute serving the entire region as a hub for studio artists, a center for public art education, and a working museum with a permanent collection and rotating visiting shows. The early 20th century school house building and the mid-20th century studio building will be connected by a new cafe and entry volume to a series of top lit art galleries and sculpture gardens with an event and lecture hall. The new galleries will be primarily used to house a collection of American art from a prominent Virginia collector, linking this landscape and the subject matter to the light and views of the surrounding mountains.
