Nestled beneath Shanghai's Minpu Bridge and adjacent to Pujiang Countryside Park, Wild Garden 野空间 (lit. Wild Space) breathes new life into a long-forgotten riverside site. Designed by FG Studio, a modest farmhouse is reimagined as a utopian design salon where architecture and nature converge seamlessly.
More than just a design project, FG Studio established the project as its creative base, overseeing every phase—from planning and construction to interior curation and ongoing operations. The newly planted landscape hints at the vibrant energy of the coming spring.
01 Site Revitalization: Inside and Out
Previously an irrigation facility for Pujiang Countryside Park, the site had grown desolate. FG Studio redefined its boundaries with clean white walls that create separation while allowing glimpses into the interior.
The layout respects the original structure, blurring rigid boundaries to foster harmony between architecture and nature. The front area serves as an open landscape with layered platforms and a central water feature, creating a minimalist sense of ceremony. The rear offers versatile spaces—a riverside bar and a wooden platform by a grove, perfect for gatherings. Tall trees anchor the site, while a preserved farmland corner revives organic living.
02 The Box: A Dialogue with Nature
Given the site’s location within Pujiang Countryside Park, the design emphasizes integration with its natural and architectural context. Instead of rebuilding, FG Studio refined the existing structures, using the “box” as a recurring element to create moments of dialogue between the architecture and its environment.
Geometric black-framed glass boxes were inserted into the two-story farmhouse, adding sharp modern contrasts to the rustic setting. In the single-story buildings, a vertical white concrete box with floor-to-ceiling windows breaks spatial monotony, doubling as an exhibition hall. Skylights introduce soft natural light, creating an interplay of old and new spaces that feels expansive and timeless.
03 A Living Design Salon
Wild Garden is a showcase of FG Studio’s passion for holistic design, blending raw structural elements with curated new materials. Exposed beams and original textures are retained as focal points, echoing the craftsmanship of displayed artworks.
The interiors feature custom-designed furniture and surfaces, including a “design showroom” with patchwork flooring made from project materials. Glass-brick partitions and partial glass flooring enhance spatial fluidity, while experimental furniture prototypes add a personal touch.
04 A Growing Space
Wild Garden extends beyond architecture, bridging nature and urbanity. The newly added northern platform offers panoramic views—Minpu Bridge’s soaring lines to the north, and tranquil, reflective courtyards to the south.
Designed as a dynamic, ever-evolving space, Wild Garden now hosts art and design exhibitions that blend seamlessly with their natural surroundings. These works interact with changing seasons, bringing life and rhythm to a setting where nature and creativity thrive together.
