The Whare Waka is a culturally significant structure to display and protect a traditionally carved Waka (canoe) for the local indigenous tribe Te Arawa (Maori). The shelter's design language is informed by the local narratives and the synergies of traditional methods of crafting the Waka. Located on the shores of Lake Rotorua, the display of the Waka is both a gift and and education to not just the local community, but the numerous international visitors.
