The Westwood Homes Community was developed by the Denver Housing Authority in 1950 with the primary goal of helping its financially blighted residents transition from a dependence on public assistance to becoming self providers.
With an emphasis on being the community interface, the Westwood Opportunity Center was placed on a small site stradeling the neighborhood pedestrian thoroughfare. Serving over 200 apartment units, the busy pedestrian thoroughfare connects residents to the bus stop on the east, the toddler play lot on the west, and a new park at its midpoint. By placeing the new Opportunity Center’s main corridor directly in line with the thoroughfare, it becomes an integrated extension of the residents daily travel pattern. While travelling through the building, residents are downloaded with all of the opportunities avialable to them, interact with counselors, teachers, and maintenance staff, and develop relationships with neighbors.
The architecture of this small building powerfully proclaims its purpose and importance to the community.
