RETAILA pair of planes with glazed facades lightly floating over retail, restaurant and office spaces. Each folds gently in order to provide spaces of greater volume to maximize day lighting or offer a greater sense of connection to nearby Western Ave. The open facade intends to offer a welcoming and visual presence to the surrounding street and neighborhood. Storefront and curtain wall glazed areas incorporate staggered horizontal mullions to create the visual effect of a gentle woven screen in lieu of a rigid grid of verticals and horizontals.North facing natural day lighting and visual connectivity to the retail spaces were considered primary factors in the design to provide bright welcoming spaces. CARWASHCalifornia's car culture was traditionally supported by many iconic carwashes located throughout the state. In recent years, the carwash has largely lost any sense of design let alone any iconic presence. MAKE developed the design of the Torrance carwash with the intent of creating a form that has a sense of being in flux, somewhat reminiscent of the form of a vehicle still being designed. The curves and folds of the skin of the carwash harkens to forms found in automobile design. Approaching the building along the entry, the form folds and slowly shifts along its length, visually moving alongside the cars as they pass. At the south side, glazing offers those using the carwash to be bathed in natural day lighting and those adjacent to see the machine in action. Instead of hiding the cars passing through the wash tunnel and the activity of the equipment, the glazing exposes these elements and makes the cars temporarily part of the life and design of the building.MAKE Architecture
