From a typical West Village townhouse layout, with constrained and dark spaces, Haute Architecture created a warm minimalist design to seamlessly bring light deep into the building. The resulting space is a meditative sanctuary that offers their clients reprieve from the hectic nature of city life.
The project is conceived as a fluid series of layered experiences along the horizontal and vertical paths. The circulation is further organized around a central nucleus, offering the owners multiple connections between living environments and a dematerialization of rooms. As in yacht construction, that nucleus is a performing element combining optimized custom cabinetry and sliding panels to transform the space and its uses.
Haute Architecture created a double height atrium as the modern heart of the house. Entertainment, living, dining, kitchen and work all flow in one polyvalent space. The dynamic shape of the opening serves to effortlessly bring the outside light and garden further into the living room, blurring the edge between interior and exterior.
Echoing the clients’ keen interest in mathematics, the architects introduced complex geometric elements, like the stairs or ceiling aperture in the living room as intricate human mementos punctuating the otherwise minimal space.
Haute Architecture worked very closely with their clients, to fashion, in a maieutic process, this vision into reality. The resulting project is a celebration of lightness, a luxury rarely seen in an urban context.
