West Potrero Duplex
San Francisco, CA
This ornate victorian duplex dates to 1911, and occupies a large corner lot near the top of the hill with views over the mission district and further west to twin peaks and north to downtown. In a dilapated state, the goal of this project was to keep the bones and open the spaces on the interior to the views, light, and 10’ ceilings. The concept of the renovation and expansion for the property was to open up both units, and to connect one unit to the ground and the other to the sky. Both properties, although open to the south and east side, were locked in to a single level vertically. Each have been expanded, up or down, to capture more space via a master ensuites or roof level decks, and have expanded their living realm to through additional light filled stories.
Windows and large sliding doors have been added to each unit to make each more luxurious and light filled. An open stair of steel and oak connects the upper unit to the sky and roof deck, and features an enormous light filled master suite with modern, but natural, finishes throughout. The lower unit features a connection to the lower floor with an accent cedar feature wall, as well as new connections to the exterior patio level that features a multi-level dedicated outdoor space with natural wood elements and garden. Natural materials were incorporated through the renovation on the interior, including the cabinetry, flooring, and countertops , to round out the modern yet natural experience, while the existing home exterior was restored and upgraded with new windows and green building envelope measures for enhanced building performance.
