This project is situated within Yuhu Bay along the Yanggongdi embankment in the core scenic area of Hangzhou's West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The original structure was a traditional waterside building nestled among the woods. The central challenge of this renovation was to create a tranquil venue within this heavily visited location—one that could both embody the millennial cultural heritage of West Lake and meet contemporary expectations for high-quality dining experiences.
The design is firmly anchored in two fundamental cultural genes of West Lake: "reclusion" and "refined elegance." It adopts a "site-responsive" approach characterized by lightweight interventions. The renovation meticulously preserves the building's original posture by the lake and its basic form of dark tiles and white walls. Enhancements are achieved through refined adjustments to the façade's window-to-wall ratio, the addition of a waterside corridor, and viewing decks. These subtle changes transform the architecture from an enclosed "box" into a transparent "viewfinder." The core strategy lies in the dissolution of boundaries: expansive glass curtain walls blur the line between inside and out, allowing the shimmering lake, dancing tree shadows, falling raindrops, and rippling water to become dynamic elements of the interior "furnishings." Carefully planned circulation and seating arrangements ensure that every vantage point captures a unique, framed view of the lake, realizing the immersive ideal of "appreciating spring-fed ravines without leaving the banquet hall."
The renewal value of this project lies in its contemporary translation and functional activation of West Lake's recluse aesthetic. It does not alter the historical fabric of the site. Instead, through an extremely restrained design approach, it elevates an ordinary support building into a cultural experience venue capable of deeply interpreting the spirit of West Lake. The renovation successfully transforms the act of "hurried sightseeing" into one of "lingering appreciation," fostering deeper consumption and emotional resonance, thereby significantly enhancing the experiential added value of the place. The project demonstrates that within highly sensitive cultural landscapes, true renewal value is not found in formal颠覆, but in using precise, humble design language to awaken the dormant cultural soul of a place, allowing it to resonate elegantly with contemporary life.
