1. Architectural Concept
Like a magician’s
cloak, secrets hidden behind the glistening veil of glass of the New
West Cork Arts Center reveal stacked glowing galleries at night in a
dramatic interplay of light and dark: chiaroscuro.
A
concrete “L” shaped wing of circulation sits beside the revamped
portion of the existing building. This cradles the volumes of galleries
and workspaces. Atop, the sloped glazed roofing system acts manifold-
as seating, collecting rainwater, filtering light and sculpturally
defining the building.
2. Functional Relationships The
approach is directly across Caol Stream on a 6 m wide bridge.
Deliveries and people flow freely into a wide, inviting lobby through a
steel roll-top door. Here visitors drink coffee, socialize and orient
themselves before embarking on artistic journeys.
Of
the total footprint of the building, about 40% of it will be salvaged
from the original (pending tests for structural stability, hazardous
materials, etc.) The funds saved will be allocated towards augmenting
circulation space. In an art gallery circulation is vital, not
ancillary. It is here that ideas are exchanged, impromptu gatherings
occur and people share experiences “outside the arena.” Main spaces
“breathe” with generous break out room. The bright artist studios sit across the main gallery
where the visiting public can be engaged.
The retail space features prominently along the waterfront and can be solely operated.
Washrooms, kitchens and mechanical areas are located in stacked service zones for efficient water and power servicing.
Impromptu
shows can spill out of the performance space onto the stage outside
where visitors, their feet barely visible in the galleries below can
enjoy the show. alongside panoramic views of West Cork proper. Dancers
in the top story dance studio be seen from those on the streets below.
Movies and experimental art projected on the wall will also animate the
public domain.
