Wertheim Village is a destination retail center located South of Frankfurt, conceived as a country fair.
Multiple building facades and varied roof forms are arranged along with a collection of small plazas and meandering streets. The project includes five separate areas that are spatially and thematically implied. These districts alternate between larger, more formal exhibition pavilions and smaller, more intimate connecting mews and passages.
The 1901 artist’s colony festival in Darmstadt, was the specific local inspiration for the elliptical central plaza.
Originally, the local authorities demanded that half-timbered buildings, part of the local vernacular, also be included. To appease the authorities, the design team stylized the vernacular half-timber buildings in the manner of the architects Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan of Northern California.
