In Wenling City, on the southeast coast of China, the Wenling Cultural Center stands as the anchor of a new arts and cultural district. The design draws inspiration from the local poem of “four mountains, one water, and five fields.” The major building components – the theater, arts center, library, and an existing museum – represent the four mountains; flowing architectural forms invoke the water; and the dedicated terraces, landscapes, and plazas represent the five fields.
The project encompasses 645,274 SF of diverse spaces, including a library, theater building, art center, public square, and below-grade parking facility.
Wenling Urban Development Investment Group Co., Ltd. wanted to create an iconic cultural destination offering social, learning, and entertainment experiences for residents while connecting international visitors to local arts and culture. DLR Group’s design draws the existing museum, new theater, arts center, and library together as a civic hub that honors Chinese and local traditional culture and invites engagement with art in all its forms.
To provide a unified public realm for the complex, the design eliminates the road separating the Wenling Museum and the center, creating a large, shared cultural plaza activated from day to night with public displays, performances, and social gatherings. Occupying a prominent corner on the main avenue near public transportation, the library activates the connection back to the city’s edge, while the river-facing theater building – housing a 1,200-seat auditorium, 500-black box theater, café, and VIP lounge – acts as a beacon for the arts.
The center’s V-shaped glass façade builds a strong visual connection between the interior and main avenue, making indoor activities visible to passersby. The porosity around the library’s ground floor extends toward the public plaza, making it a welcoming gateway to the cultural complex.
While the library’s glass façade bordering the main street creates a strong urban interface, the theater façade reflects the natural environment that surrounds the area. Textured metal panels and linear louvers provide a varied and delicate architectural texture along the river and central plaza while the theater provides a sweeping river view from its lobby.
“Third spaces,” or transitional areas, such as balconies and rooftop gardens, serve as informal venues for art programs, classes, and community gatherings. These areas connect integrated building volumes, promoting fluid movement and interaction among the various spaces and inviting citizens to take part in the center’s myriad activities, from music, dancing, and calligraphy to concerts and stage plays.
Sustainability strategies implemented throughout the project preserve and honor the site's ecological and cultural heritage and ensure that the Wenling Cultural Center will serve as an asset to community members and visitors for generations to come. Daylighting, natural passive ventilation, rainwater collection and reuse, solar heating, and friendly building materials work to minimize environmental impact while adding depth to the building’s connection to its natural context.
The center is poised to meet the requirements for a China Two-Star Green Building. A solar photovoltaic power generation system and air source heat pumps reduce energy consumption and effectively utilize resources, thereby maintaining the ecological health of the site.
DLR Group won an international design competition to secure the project and completed conceptual design, schematic design, and project implementation phase consultancy.
