The Welcome House is located in Umbarger, Texas and serves as a weekend and winter getaway for a Dallas Family. Minimalist interiors create an atmosphere of calm, prioritizing views of the landscape. Use of sliding doors allows access to the outside as well as to interior courtyard spaces, which are left empty and filled with foldable patio furniture as needed. Skylights also take advantage of the ample Texas sunlight and allow for minimal light fixtures in the bedrooms and living areas. Black window and door frames echo the materiality of the exterior, while ultimately giving deference to the cooler interior colors.
On the exterior three main volumes house the core program, occasionally punctured by glazed circulation spaces that allow for reflection of the landscape. The circulation component also has the added benefit of linking the three main volumes. The western most volume houses the kitchen, the dining room and guest loft, leading into a study space and finally the living room and bedrooms. The contemporary modification of the traditional A-frame is a key component of the design. Bedrooms on the second floor allow residents and visitors to see this formal, soft, expression. Dark stained wood rain screens feature on the north and south façades, complementing the shingled façades to the east and west. The dark colors of the house accentuate reflections of the sky and landscape in the windows and serve to contrast with the low horizon and light colors of the desert.
