This project
has been through quite a few avatars as the brief kept changing. The earliest
manifestation was in form of a small farmhouse to be used for R&R; the
latest as a full-fledged second home away from home. Located about 11 KM from
Ahmedabad, at first it was designed based on the golden spiral proportions,
where the roof housed a lawn that was actually a slab cast as a spiral ramp
that could be approached from the garden below, thus seamlessly integrating the
exterior with the built form. The plan was designed in an involute with golden
proportions of 1:1.61.
The
next manifestation saw the external swimming pool become a central internal
pool with all spaces enveloping it, and the rooms facing open ground around. Then the brief changed to a full-fledged
residence instead of a weekend home. This final manifestation was designed as a
cruciform where all corners are open and larger external spaces are achieved,
while all internal spaces are open on three sides. The central shaft also
houses a spiral staircase around the dining space and skylight above. This is
currently under construction.
