The Owner requested a semi-enclosed structure at the pond edge for reading, napping, meditation, wildlife viewing as well as serving as a “launching platform” for boating and swimming on the pond.
The structure was to be “honest” in material and craft, and a reflection of the client’s interest in Japanese design.
The design solution was conceived as a platform and floating roof connected by a series of layers and textured screens. The openness of the screens reflects the need for privacy, wind/sun protection as well as view framing. Native materials are used without finishes allowing for natural weathering. From a distance the structure is intended to blend with the surrounding landscape, but up close it provides a sense of shelter and protection. The owner’s appreciation of an “honest building” and the builder’s commitment to craft led to an emphasis on exposed/articulated connections.
