This architecture installation was constructed for the Environmental Charter Schools located in Gardena C.A. and was supported by a grant from Cuningham Group Architects Trust. ᅠECS is relocating their middle school to a new location which is currently an early 1900s church and school house building which will be renovated into a modern and sustainable building. ᅠIn order to build relationships with the local inhabitants of the neighborhood, OGD proposed creating a seasonal art piece and holding the annual festival of lights winter celebration at the new school location inviting the community to a green education introduction explaining what ECS is all about. ᅠ
The project was created entirely from upcycled movie sets which were
donated from Intrinsic Studios in North Hollywood. ᅠThese walls were shaped into an experiencial pathway which students assisted in painting and constructing which also became the backdrop for a high-school art exhibition. ᅠStudents learned the value of upcycling, using low cost passive strategies in the construction of architecture, and the importance of building community. ᅠThe installation
is a sign of rebirth and rejuvenation of an abandoned space which will shortly become a vibrant hub of environmental education.
