Waternet

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Firm
YEAR
2001
As the roads of Rotterdam clog up with traffic, Rotterdam has decided to utilize the Maas and its branches for water-based passenger transport. The ‘Waternet’ project consists of a large number of stops for water-taxi’s, waterbuses and party-boats. On the grand waterways of Rotterdam, these pontoons appear as striking, colourful objects with recognizable and unique appearances. The docking stations can be found from the coast of Hoek van Holland, past Rotterdam, up to the 'Brienenoordeiland'. The ‘Waternet’ project’s programmatic requirements consisted of docking stations for boats of different sizes, clear stop denomination and an information panel. Furthermore, shelter from the, often strong, winds on the water and a place to sit needed to be created. Depending on the number of docking ships and available seats, a small or large pontoon is deployed.
