Water lily
The main concept of the project „water
lily“ relates to the found environment of the site, which is mainly
in the former use of a railway station and the following green circle
of trees, surrounding the area. This formal expression gives the area
a unique appearance within the city and tells the history of the
place, which people know and emotionally accepted.
To keep this feeling of history and
already known formal presence, the water lily incorporates this
history by using the existing circles and reprogramming them, by
filling in new functions and therewith a new emotion which contrasts
the other uses and generating a positive tension between the old and
new.
The main functions remains in the
center of the area, surrounded by a circle of trees. This inner/outer
area serves as sculpture garden, relax zone and activity zone used by
the nobel peace center AND the museum.
This area then is sheltered by other
functions such as administration, workshop and library, satellites,
which have a glass facade opening the inner functions towards the
museum, its terraces and the common outside areas.
This is done in order to show people
not only the exhibitions, but also the very interesting process
behind the museum – circulate around the history and forming a
new content at the same time.
The water lily relates in height to
the city hall and groups the slender and smaller buildings around the
main volume in order to use the scattered appearance to reduce the
mass of the required volume. The facade is also moving back and forth
to differentiate the building and to hide the amount of levels within
the building. Thus leading to a compact volume within the city –
strong enough to have presence but also differentiated enough to
be part of the city.
