This was a very quick project, done in about two weeks. The assignment to choose our own unique site and to design a house. The only constrictions were that the site had to be very narrow and we were to expect that similar houses would be built directly adjacent to our building on both sides. The site I chose was a hill in California. The entrance to the house is at the top of the hill, and from there the house continually steps down the hill.
Given that this is a very narrow lot, one of my goals was to create a lot of outdoor living space through the creation of roof terraces. Additionally, by avoiding extending the interior rooms out to the edges of the site, and adding some vegetation, I could still create an almost entirely glazed building without forcing the occupants of the houses to be looking through each others’ windows.
Starting at the topmost terrace, there are multiple pools of water that flow down as the house descends down the hill, finally spilling into the pool at the back of the house. All of the most important rooms in the house have a view of these pools and waterfalls.
