Water Pavilion won Grand Prize for the Boston Harbor Island Alliance and U.S. National Park Service international competition. The glass and steel structure on a thin stone platform surrounded by a shallow pool of water creates a contemporary version of an island lighthouse. LED screens that display images of the Islands are suspended within a double glass skin which surrounds a dramatic light-filled exhibition and gathering space. The new facility, located on the Rose Kennedy Greenway over the “Big Dig”, will inform tourists and Boston residents of the spectacular but underused national park in Boston Harbor. The pavilion will be a shimmering icon of the Islands during the day and at night evokes reflections of the stars, moon, and city on the waters of Boston Harbor.
