Molėtai is a land of lakes, where water becomes part of the city experience.
The architectural concept behind the Molėtai Water Discovery Center was shaped by the desire to create more than just a modern building—an educational attraction that would strengthen local identity and contribute to the quality of the urban environment.
The project stands out because the building is not the main focus – instead, it is the public space. The central square with water and light elements is designed as a living city stage, operating all year round. It is an open space that encourages meetings, events, and daily movement, naturally strengthening the urban fabric and local identity of Molėtai.
The main entrance is formed by an open wall and a recessed atrium with a water basin, in which the reflected church is symbolically incorporated into the interior of the building, strengthening the connection between the city's history and contemporary architecture.
Inside, visitors are invited not to observe, but to experience the water cycle. The exhibition is planned as a sequential journey – from groundwater and sounds on the first floors of the building to movement, waves, ice, evaporation, storms, and light phenomena on the upper floors. Each space acts through the senses: movement, sound, light, and temperature. Learning here takes place through experience rather than information.
Another unique feature of the project is the building's roof, which is a public, landscaped space offering views of the lake and the city and becoming a natural extension of the exhibition. Outdoor spaces—streams, waterfalls, geysers, a rain pavilion, an island, and a terrace—allow visitors to experience water phenomena in a real environment while maintaining free movement along the shore.
With this project, we aim to create long-term value for the Molėtai community: public infrastructure that inspires, connects, and nurtures the city for the future.
