The Northwest Library in the Washoe County Library District in Reno, Nevada serves as a place for individual study, a place for quiet reading and a place for the community. Designed and built as the center of the neighborhood, the Northwest Library branch has a full collection of children’s, adult and young adult literature.
The original shell of the Northwest Library housed a battery assembly plant and distribution center. This posed quite a challenge for the RAFI design team in utilizing the original structural elements in place for such an industrial building. In addition to the interior design elements, at the main entrance to the building is a wall designed to match the surrounding picturesque Sierra Mountains.
Along with a large collection of books, the library serves as Center of Place for the neighborhood, complete with separate meeting rooms to house classes for life and community enrichment, along with facilities to house events hosting two to two-hundred.
In addition, the library is directly adjacent to the regional high school, making studying, youth programs and socializing the center of activities of the community library. Young adult activities range from programs where older children teach younger children, to weekend overnighters where the young adults can socialize in a safe fun environment. The Northwest Library is also host to a gallery for the visual arts which host’s numerous exhibits for local and regional artists.
