Washington Park Reservoirs Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes highly prized historic resources for the citizens of Portland and Portland’s national and international visitors. The City of Portland Water Bureau has proposed a rehabilitation that will preserve original dams and gatehouses, while adding new below-grade water storage with a cascading water pool above.
Peter Meijer Architect, PC (PMA) led and was responsible for:
• The liaison with the preservation community including private individuals, groups devoted to historic preservation, and the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission;
• The assessment of historic resources including the basins, walkways, railings, dams, gatehouses, equipment, Weir building, Pump house, Generator house, and fountains;
• Material conservation;
• A 3D laser scan of the interconnected resources at the site, enabling dimensional accuracy and locating elevation points relative to one another; and
• Internal team guidance on the design response for improvement to the reservoirs demonstrating a sufficiently thoughtful process that mitigates alterations to the reflective nature and color of a deep pool reservoir.
