Modestly elegant
with a strong architectural language the building sits discretely on the site,
yet internally behind the solidity lies an altogether different architectural
language. The three single storey boxes 5.8 x 5.8 metres (constructed of
concrete and glass) are linked by glass to create the residence measure 2.8
metres high. The
arrangement of the boxes allows no overlooking or overshadowing issues to arise
thus having no detrimental effect on the surrounding area or neighbouring
properties. The entrance to the dwelling
occurs in the glazed link between the first box (housing the kitchen/utility/WC
spaces) and the central box (accommodating the dining area and access to the
basement level). Once entered the property
reveals itself as a responsive configuration of skilfully contained views from
the interior and manipulation of natural light combined with fluid, informal
spaces which create architecture that has some dramatic moments but it is not
aggressively sculptural. The house is complex and nuanced which engages people
and allows the dwelling a character. The ground floor is made up of three main
free flowing spaces for food preparation, dining and relaxing all focusing onto
the northwest facing double height courtyard measuring 3.5 x 8.8 metres. This
allows the property to take advantage of all available day light and much
sought solar gain. The glazed wall to the courtyard side of the dining area
slides back allowing an almost alfresco dining experience that interacts with
the double height courtyard whilst enjoying access to the rear courtyard along
with the lounge. The Kitchen captures light throughout the day and has access
to the courtyard via external stairs. The ground floor exploits the intergraded
use of outdoor living spaces thus allowing the house to extend into the
external area, yet no overlooking of neighbouring properties can occur. Basement
level is accessed via stairs in the central box and accommodated 4 bedrooms, 3
bathrooms, store and library area. All habitable rooms enjoy access to the
courtyard space allowing all to receive natural light.
Refined
and composed the design exudes a calm thoughtfulness and a concern with the
qualities of space, site and light. This well-mannered neighbour is a refined
modern account of suburban architecture.
