The Wall Unitizer creates an intricate vertical landscape
from ordinary household tasks. The clients, a young family moving to a 4,000sf
apartment, needed new furniture for their foyer, living room, home office and
television area. Instead of a collection of pieces, the Wall Unitizer
accommodates the disparate programmatic functions of the space by reaching from
the wall to create seats, counters, desks, storage and display spaces.
Based on a grid derived from existing conditions
and use-specific inputs, the Wall Unitizer coats the interior walls of the
great room to form a dynamic spine of activity. At the foyer the Wall Unitizer
reaches down to create a bench for its users to put on shoes. It hosts a mirror
for last minute make-up checks and an occasional table for keys, mail and
pocket change. As the Wall Unitizer makes its way around the corner into the
living space, the grid opens up to create shelving for display and storage for
special items. Turning the next corner into the home office, the Wall Unifier’s
substrate shifts from bleached ash plywood to a firm cork that lets the
inhabitants tack up photographs and to-do lists. Integrated task lights cast a
glow onto his-and-her work spaces. Where a home office was needed, the Wall
Unitizer becomes an intricate series of bookshelves where interlocking planes
create ample space for storage and file drawers. As it leaps over an existing
door it recedes back to the wall and becomes operable paneling that is capable
of being deployed to show off the client’s collection of sterling silver
artifacts. In this final area a large TV sits astride a low shelf within which
the audio visual components of the entertainment system are stored.
Through a formal unification of tasks, the Wall
Unitizer transforms an ordinary, undifferentiated apartment into a unique space.
The space is defined by its functions and becomes a three-dimensional
manifestation of the owner’s lifestyle. By visually anchoring the large room
with interior articulation the rest of the space is able to be a free plan that
takes advantage of the floor-to-ceiling windows that clad the south facing
façade.
