The WalkNYC pedestrian wayfinding system was designed by a joint venture led by wayfinding specialists CityID. Billings Jackson Design were the industrial designers and worked alongside graphics firm Pentagram, mapping specialists T-Kartor, and RBA Group, which was responsible for engineering and project management. The group combined local knowledge and implementation skills with international credentials in delivering integrated city-scale design solutions.
Directional signage and easily readable maps are placed at key pedestrian decision points and transit interchanges to integrate with other transportation modes, including CitiBike Stations and the Select Bus Service. By including walking times, the signage encourages tourists and New Yorkers alike to explore the richness and diversity of the city.
The project provides a benchmark for other cities worldwide that are looking to improve the way people navigate and move around their city.
