Hord Coplan Macht was hired to program, plan and design a new school in Washington, DC. Part of the larger Northwest One Masterplan, the new school serves students in pre-kindergarten through grade eight. Designed for a capacity of approximately 850 students, the school will replace two existing DCPS facilities on the site and adjacent to it. The 4.5 acre parcel is located on New Jersey Avenue, and is surrounded by a residential neighborhood. The project is being developed by a private entity, though it will be operated by DCPS once it is completed.
The building program calls for a school of approximately 100,000 sf to house classrooms, labs, a media center, a cafeteria with a stage and offices. The school will share a gymnasium with a 20,000 sf community recreation center, also programmed as part of the complex. This center will also house its own support spaces. Adjacent to the recreation center will be a small public library branch of approximately 5,000 sf. Site program features include playing fields, playgrounds, service and circulation.
One of the major challenges of the project involves the siting of the building. While a larger scale urban gesture should be made on the New Jersey Avenue side, the school, recreation center and library are to be primarily accessed from the neighboring residences. The very tight site requires a creative response that addresses the particular programmatic demands while also respecting the larger Northwest One Masterplan parameters. The project was developed with a very aggressive design schedule—construction began in the spring of 2008, and the school occupancy began in the fall semester of 2009.
