Wah Seng’s Green Leap: Malaysia’s First GreenRE Platinum-Rated Warehouse
Wah Seng, a third-generation family business rooted in Ipoh since the 1950s, has grown from a humble provision shop into one of the region’s most trusted food distributors. With this evolution came a need not just for more space, but for a facility that reflected the company’s values of quality, responsibility, and long-term vision.
The result is a bold reinvention of an aging warehouse into Malaysia’s first GreenRE Platinum-rated warehouse. Designed as a three-storey office and distribution centre, the facility integrates sustainability, efficiency, and comfort at every level.
Energy-saving systems include a carbon dioxide-based cold room achieving up to 45% energy savings, five-star-rated air conditioning in office spaces, and solar PV panels covering the entire roof to generate 15% of the building’s electricity needs. Natural light, ventilation, and lighting zoning further reduce energy demand, while water-efficient fittings, submeters, and a rainwater harvesting system improve resource management. Materials were carefully chosen for their green certifications, including low-VOC paints to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
Beyond performance, the design delivers a strong visual identity. Wah Seng’s signature green wraps boldly around the façade, while staggered glazing lifts the architecture into a clean, elegant composition. Internally, thoughtful graphics and finishes brighten traditionally utilitarian areas, creating a workplace that feels both practical and inspiring. Breakout spaces with landscaping and preserved mangosteen trees give employees a comfortable environment to rest.
This project reflects Wah Seng’s commitment to building for the next generation — blending operational efficiency with sustainable architecture that serves both people and planet. More than just a warehouse, it is a statement of intent: to modernise responsibly, remain a dependable partner to the community, and set a new benchmark for industrial design in Malaysia.
