A house with a Temple for the mother goddess was to be designed for a celebrated family residing in a village near Sawantwadi. A century old house was to be brought down including the Temple. The house was adjoining to some of the existing structures of the other family members. Responding to the site parameters and the brief - the Temple, the Sabhamandapa and the house was designed in squares of 4 x 4M, 9 x 9M, 13 x 13M respectively. The house was designed on principles of ‘Vastu-Shastra’. Four basalt stone columns divides the Sabhamandapa into nine squares - ‘Navagraha’ creating a spiritual base for the Sanctum - ‘The Garbhagriha’. The Temple and the Sabhamandapa are designed and constructed in traditional materials like black basalt stone and bricks for the Shikhara. A central open space - ’The Courtyard’ provides light and ventilation to the living spaces around.
