VONSUNG PAVILION, "DICHOTOMY"AWARD-WINNING LONDON DESIGN STUDIO, VONSUNG, DESIGNS DRAMATIC TEMPORARY RESTAURANT AND BAR PAVILION INSIDE TENT LONDON DURING THE LONDON DESIGN FESTIVALWe are interested in how each project can develop from its own unique set of circumstances. In this instance, the pavilion’s concept is based on a unique dining experience as well as the spectacular viewing of exhibiting designs during Tent London. “This is the Rolls Royce of pop-up restaurants. While we experiment the dichotomy of space design, we reveal/hide the pavilion aperture by forming enter/exit in tandem”, according to Joseph Sung, Creative Director of VONSUNG. From 23 September 2010, for a 4 day period, guests will get to visit VONSUNG’s striking pop-up pavilion as it hosts TENT LONDON's dining and bar space. Built within a live exhibition site, 147 sqm area within the venerable Truman Brewery, the pavilion forms a commanding presence on London’s ever-growing design community.A fast build, the primary structure is constructed from hired materials borrowed from the VONSUNG’s existing project sites to create the walls and floors of the 147 square meter dining and bar space. The cladding material, which encases the floor and roof, is Bolon, a world leader in woven vinyl material and Valchromat, providing the engineered colored wood for the walls. Exemplifying the dichotomy side of he studio's design, the whole structure will be illuminated by both skylight and dramatic lighting (by iGuzzini), forming shadows and silhouettes of the events held within, creating a compelling jewel on Tent London's design event. The pattern of the two spaces will be reinforced in the floor and wall, creating a giant-sized herringbone effect, which will define the character of the individual spaces between the restaurant and bar areas. As the structure is seen from all sides, and as such has been conceived as a pavilion with views from all sides providing a panoramic angle of the exhibition’s space. The roof of the pavilion structure is designed to be seen from all directions; a series of title waves, tilting towards key views forming a playful roofscape. The spaces beneath this roof also consist of the creation of 'hard vs. soft' materials creating a radiating series of spaces, from the central dining area with the Peggy Table (Series) from Pearson Lloyd and chairs by Modus.“We have had to conceive the design of the pavilion taking into account the very short construction time, the short life span of the restaurant and the need for it to return to the original state of the Truman Brewery shortly after the event. Furthermore, our intention was to create a more pleasurable hospitality space during the exhibition which you normally do not get at other design festivals. We are exhibiting how a well thought-out branding exercise should be for a restaurant project - all the way down to the detail of our packaging and utensils.” concludes Joseph Sung.PROJECT: VONSUNG Pavilion "Dichotomy"LOCATION: Tent London (Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 London)DATES: 23 Sept - 26 Sept, 2010HOURS: 10:00 - 20:00DESIGN: Joseph Sung, Jing ChenGRAPHIC: Michiko Ito, Erika KoAREA: 147 square meterSTATUS: Design and build
